The Perfect Strawberries - Gayathri Deshpande

I went around town one fine day,

Hunting the Perfect Strawberries.

I told each vendor,

"I want them as sweet as heaven

And maybe just a little sour."

They all looked so very confused

And, perhaps, slightly awkward too.

They said, more or less,

"Ma'am, strawberries aren't in season;

They will not really be sweet."

So i went back home and said, "Mom?

I would like a strawberry cake

But they're all bland now."

And then my mom said, "You just wait.

Good things will come to those who wait."

[12:29, 4/27/2021] Gayathridpandey: So i waited for strawberries -

The most unmarred and the brightest,

Redder than my lips,

Sweeter than any mother's kiss.

So, yes, i just sat and waited.

And when t'was the right season

(No, not Christmas, but strawberries,

You funny bug brain)

I went, asked them vendors again,

"Got any juicy strawberries?"

Most said yes, "Sweetest of them all!"

I brought back home the reddest haul.

Half of them were sour.

"But they're supposed to be the best

It's even the right season, mom!"

Mom sighed heavy and said, "Honey

You can't always get what you want.

Learn to compromise.

Half of those strawberries are sweet.

Take what's there, be grateful for it."

The next day I baked a shortcake

And it turned out just as I wanted.

My mom smiled at me.

Difference between my need and want -

I'd needed half the strawberries.

( About trying to find exactly what you need in life, the wait it takes, and the compromises you have to make, and about understanding the difference between need and want)
